Workplace Communications: Seven Simple Rules for Getting Along at Work

Workplace communications. It's the foundation of all work place relationships. When you factor in the fact that most professionals spend at least a third of their time at work, being an effective communicator becomes a core competency that everyone should work to improve. Developing good communications and workplace relationships can often, however, be difficult to achieve. Here are 7 simple communications rules to help you improve your relationships with co-workers...and raise your quality-of-life-at-work.

Observe boundaries. People have different comfort zones regarding their personal space, inquiries about their personal lives, and their personal property that deserve your respect. For example, a civil office relationship can quickly turn nasty if a colleague's desk space is raided for candy without their permission. Fulfill commitments. The currency of most relationships is based on whether your "word is your bond." In other words, be trustworthy. Follow through on your personal and professional commitments to your colleagues. If your reputation at work is ever on the line, your co-workers will be more likely to reserve judgment and grant you the benefit of doubt...just when you need it the most. Respect time. Some people you work with are social animals who enjoy the banter and casual conversation that goes on in every office. Others can live without it. Notice the rhythm and ease that co-workers exchange pleasantries with you, and engage them up to but not exceeding their comfort zones. When they get antsy or start glancing at their watches, move on and let them get back to work. Pay attention. Many of us talk more than we listen. Practice active listening and learn to process what is said and unsaid (i.e., consider a colleague's voice inflection, body language, etc.) in order to improve the quality of your communication in the work place. Is there an introvert in your midst? Someone who reflects first and then speaks? Ramp-up your listening and processing skills with these colleagues so that they know their thoughts and feelings are appreciated and accepted. Avoid gossip. Those who talk about others will talk about you, too. When you or others are being damned by faint praise, (it happens!), or falsehoods about you are being spread like wildfire, you will want a colleague with the backbone to nip that gossip in the bud. That means you have to walk away from gossip when you encounter it, in spite of how appealing it may be. Ask questions. When in doubt, ask! Find out whether a colleague prefers to hit the ground running or ease into the morning slowly. Ask your co-workers in the next office whether they prefer a phone call, an email, or a face-to-face visit if you have a quick question in the middle of the day. Then, demonstrate that you respect their preferences by acting on them. Check-in. Listen to what your gut is telling you about your work place relationships. If anything in your communication with a colleague feels out of order, check to see how you can iron it out in order to get back on track with each other. Addressing miscues and miscommunications in your work place relationships when they first occur is much easier than waiting until the problem escalates into open hostilities. Effective communication in the work place is vital to improving personal productivity and attaining a high quality-of-life-at work. Strengthening your communications skills and work place relationships takes both time and effort. And...it's worth it.

Impact Of Non-Verbal Communication

No matter how much one can try one can not not-communicate. Communication can be classified as Verbal and Non-Verbal. Verbal Communication is through words and speech; whereas; Non-Verbal communication does not involve speech or words, this is a wordless message received through the medium of gestures, signs, body movements, facial expressions, tone of voice, colour, time, space, style of writing, choice of words, clothing and hairstyle.

Researches in communication suggest that many more feelings and intentions are sent and received non-verbally than verbally. Mehrabian and Wienerfollowing suggested that only 7% of message is sent through words while remaining 93% is sent through non-verbal expressions (55% through facial expression, body language, gestures and 38% through tone of voice, inflection). Thus, the research suggest that non-verbal communication is more instinctive, powerful, requires deep thinking, conscious efforts and is more genuine. Education Psychologist Marilyn Maple says, "When you can consciously "read", what others are saying unconsciously, you can deal with issues at work and at home before they turn into full blown problems."

Non-Verbal Communication can be classified as KINESICS LANGUAGE (Use of Body Language which includes facial expression, eye contact, gestures, appearances); PROXEMICS LANGUAGE (Use of Space Language, Surrounding and Environment); TIME LANGUAGE (Effective Time Management); SIGN LANGUAGE (Use of Visuals, Audio/ Sound) and HAPTICS LANGUAGE (Use of "Touch" Language)

Impact Of Non-Verbal Communication

According to Dr. Pradeep Moonot, "Many times we tend to convey our feelings by smiling, patting, shouting, frowning or even by using different tones, gestures and facial expression to give a deeper meaning to our sentences. People communicate by the way they walk, stand and sit. Positive Postures and Movements are frequent indicators of self-confidence, energy, status, attitude, affective mood, approval and warmth". Whereas; Dressing identifies sex, age, socio-economic class, religion, status, role, group membership, occasion, personality, mood and physical environment.

Accent, Intonation, Pitch, Speed of Delivery and Clarity are factors attributing to non-verbal communication. As the Proverb says, "It is not what we say that counts, but how we say it", reflects the significance of vocal intonation. Some words or phrases can have different meanings depending on how they are said. Difference in loudness, pitch, temper, rate, inflection, rhythm and enunciation all relate to the expression of various emotions.

The saying, "A Picture is worth a thousand words", well describes the meaning of facial expressions which may be intentional or unintentional. However, the most dominant and reliable features of the face are the Eyes and Smile - The Eyes provides a constant channel of communication. They can be shifty and evasive, convey hate, fear and guilt, or express confidence, love and support; whereas; Smiling is a Positive, Powerful cue that transmits happiness, friendliness, warmth, liking, affiliation and affection.

Finally, the importance of Non-Verbal Communication is rightly explained by Nancy Austin, a management consultant, "When people don't know whether to believe what they are hearing or what they are seeing, they try to follow the non-verbal language which often tells the truth. You can play fast and get loose with words, but it's much more difficult to lose with gestures."

Here are few TIPS for effective Non-Verbal Communication:-

1. Make yourself comfortable, relaxed and attentive.

2. Maintain frequent eye contact; avoid staring, glaring or looking away.

3. Control the Tone of your Voice.

4. Gestures should not reveal emotional frustrations.

5. Maintain a clear Audible voice.

6. Maintain a pleasant and genuine Smile.

Watch satellite TV on PC, TV or cable TV? This is a question of choice but not on equal grounds since each have its strengths and weaknesses. According to a national wide survey, an average American probably spends more than 16% of his time in an entire year watching TV. This translates to about two months in a year which is more than half the time we spend on sleeping. Another staggering fact is more than two-thirds of American homes own more than three TV sets. TV is part of American culture. Discover what the differences are to help you decide whether to watch satellite TV on PC, TV or cable TV.

What are some of the differences? Should you watch satellite TV on PC, TV or cable TV?

1. Locality and Accessibility

Watch Satellite TV on PC, TV or Cable TV

Cable TV tends to be well-received in built-up areas since it is not affected by terrains and weather. However, in places where cable technology has not reached, such as rural areas or some suburban districts, satellite TV is their choice. In fact, you can set up a satellite dish system to watch satellite TV on your TV from any part of the world so it has a worldwide appeal. Where you can have internet access, you can watch satellite TV on PC readily.

2. TV Reception

You should not have any problem to watch satellite TV channels with clarity as long as your satellite dish system is set up for clear line of sight with the satellites. High rise buildings are ideal places for such systems as the satellite has full view of the skies. Needless to say, cable TV is able to receive and display TV channel feeds with a certain degree of clarity. However, since the reception of satellite dish system depends on external conditions such as weather, it may be less reliable during different seasons of the year. Fortunately, you can overcome this if you watch satellite TV on PC. Watching PC satellite TV is not constrained by weather or nature elements since they receive their feeds via internet connections which is a highly reliable media portal.

3. Variety of TV Programs

Satellite TV is a clear winner in this. Since it is made to receive free-to-air broadcasts, you can practically watch any channel as long as your satellite dish system can cover it. Nowadays, you can even watch satellite TV on PC if you prefer not to touch a satellite dish. Even though cable TV has been working hard to secure more channels for their subscribers, it is still pretty self-limiting in the number of TV channels it can offer. With satellite TV, you get to watch worldwide TV channels from any country and in any language.

4. TV System Installation

When you watch satellite TV, there are in fact three options. Either you build your own satellite dish system to receive free-to-air broadcasts or you can take advantage of free equipment installation provided when you subscribe for monthly satellite TV program packages with the service providers. The third option which is a new one is to watch satellite TV on PC using software application and internet connection. This is simply the easiest way to watch satellite TV.

5. Pricing

Satellite TV has an unfair advantage over cable TV in this aspect. Cable TV providers have to pay heavier levies charged by the state governments since the infrastructural makeup is more complicated and intensive than satellite TV providers which are light in infrastructure. Capital costs for cable TV companies are higher and with the advent of digital TV becoming the next big thing, it is a matter of time when they have to upgrade those million miles of ground-embedded obsolete cables. This is why satellite TV providers are able to charge less for more. In fact, if you watch satellite TV on PC, you can do away with monthly subscriptions and expensive Do-It-Yourself (DIY) style dish systems since you only pay once for the PC satellite TV software.

So I certainly hope this article can help you in making a choice between satellite or cable TV. You need:

How To Set Up A TV Satellite Dish And Sky Digibox To Watch English Channels Such As BBC And ITV

A TV (preferably one with a SCART socket)
An ex-rental Sky Digibox that has already been used in the UK
A dish of the appropriate size (see my earlier article and astra2d.com for a size guide) with LNB
Co-ax cable
A Sky viewing card or Freeview card
Necessary fixings to mount the dish
Mounting the dish

The satellite we are looking for is Astra 2D 28.2E. This located at 28.2 degrees East of South. Let me tell you why setting up the angle and elevation is very important and has to be done very carefully. Astra 2D is in a geostationary orbit, which means it appears to be stationary when seen from the rotating earth.. The normal height for a geostationary satellite is 36,000Km and the satellite is only 8m tall and just over 2m diameter, it actually looks like a tin of baked beans with the lid open! So the alignment of the dish has to be done very accurately.

I cannot help you too much with the exact angles you need as they vary depending on your location. Here in the Southern French Alps a compass bearing of 150 degrees with an elevation of 34 degrees are the figures required. In Bucharest in Romania a bearing of 177 degrees and an elevation of 39 degrees would be required. Looking on the internet, particularly on ex pat web sites for your area, will normally reveal the magic numbers.

So mount your dish where you like, it does not need to be on the roof as it does not work like an aerial. It just needs a clear path between it and the satellite, no trees or buildings. The steepness of the angle surprises a lot of people, in the type of dish where the LNB is supported on an arm attached to the bottom of the dish, the 'beam' angle we are interested in is roughly parallel to that arm. Set the elevation to the correct value and leave the bracket slightly loose so that you can turn the dish from side to side. Using a compass, point the dish at a compass bearing you have (150 in my case). You will not get it right first time, but the closer you are, the less danger of finding the wrong satellite there is.

Getting it all working

Now, connect the dish to the box an the box to the TV and switch on the power.

Warning: The dish cable carries a small electric current, so never connect or disconnect it while the box is live; otherwise some of the electronic components could be damaged

Do not worry if the remote control does not react immediately - after switching on the power the Digibox can take several seconds before it will respond. On the remote control, press Services, then press 4, then 6. This will display a Signal Test screen. Ignore the Signal Strength and Signal Quality bars for the moment. You should however have something in the Signal Strength bar. (If you do not, you have a faulty connection on the way to the LNB).

Place the TV where it can be seen while manipulating the dish, move the dish until the zeros change to 0002 (Network ID) and 07d4 (Transport Stream). The change will be quite sudden so go carefully to avoid swinging the dish too far. The Lock Indicator will also change from 'Not locked' to 'OK'. The value of 07d4 is usually the case but you might encounter others, particularly if you are trying to get a signal in southern Europe. However the Network ID must be 0002, otherwise you are pointing at the wrong satellite.

Finishing off the setup

As soon as the Network ID and Transport Stream values change from zero, a digital signal is being received. Clamp the dish, then press the Backup button on the remote control 3 times to return to the normal screen. Now wait until the box has finished getting the program data.

If after aligning the dish, you get a signal but there is interference on sound or vision, it is almost certainly caused by the dish elevation or direction being slightly out of alignment. Move the dish very slightly and carefully and watch the Signal Quality bar on the Signal Test screen for the greatest value. Anything over about 50% should give good reception.
